AZ80 Magnesium Alloy
AZ80 is a relatively high-strength wrought magnesium-aluminum-zinc alloy offering a good strength-to-weight ratio, good machinability, and heat-treatable properties. Compared with AZ31B, AZ80 provides higher strength and hardness, making it better suited for lightweight mechanical components subjected to higher loads.
Appearance & Properties
Color: Silver-white to light gray
Density: Approx. 1.80 g/cm³
Tensile Strength: Approx. 300–380 MPa, depending on condition and heat treatment
Corrosion Resistance: Moderate
Machinability: Good
Weldability: Moderate
Strength: Relatively high
Heat Treatment: Can be age-hardened for improved properties
Surface Finishes: Chemical conversion coating, anodizing, bead blasting, painting, powder coating, etc.
Typical Applications
AZ80 is widely used in aerospace, automotive, motorcycles, industrial equipment, sporting goods, and high-performance lightweight structures.
Typical parts include wheels, brackets, connectors, robotic components, structural frames, transmission parts, and high-strength precision CNC components.
Advantages
• Higher strength than AZ31B
• Good strength-to-weight ratio
• Good CNC machinability
• Mechanical properties can be improved through heat treatment
• Suitable for medium-to-high load lightweight components
Limitations
• Limited corrosion resistance
• Lower weldability than AZ31B
• Generally more expensive than common magnesium alloys
• Not ideal for prolonged high-temperature service
