EN-GJL-250 Gray Cast Iron
EN-GJL-250 is a widely used gray cast iron grade specified under the European EN 1561 standard, with a nominal minimum tensile-strength class of 250 MPa. Its flake graphite structure provides excellent vibration damping together with good machinability, wear resistance, and castability, making it a common material for machine tools and industrial structural components.
Appearance & Properties
Color: Dark gray to gray-black
Density: Approx. 7.1–7.3 g/cm³
Tensile Strength: Nominal grade requirement around ≥250 MPa, depending on section thickness and standard test conditions
Wear Resistance: Good
Machinability: Good
Vibration Damping: Excellent
Compressive Strength: Excellent
Castability: Good
Magnetism: Magnetic
Surface Finishes: Painting, black oxide, phosphating, plating, grinding, etc.
Typical Applications
EN-GJL-250 is widely used in machine tools, automotive, industrial machinery, pumps and valves, transmission equipment, and general mechanical manufacturing.
Typical parts include machine beds, bases, worktables, machine housings, gearbox housings, pump bodies, valve bodies, end covers, and various CNC-machined castings.
Advantages
• Excellent vibration-damping capability
• Good machinability
• Good wear and compressive performance
• Suitable for large and complex cast structures
• Good balance between cost and mechanical performance
Limitations
• Relatively brittle with limited impact resistance
• Lower tensile strength than most structural steels
• Poor weldability
• Susceptible to oxidation and rust without surface protection
