Cast Acrylic
Cast acrylic is produced by polymerizing liquid PMMA material inside a mold. It offers high optical clarity, relatively low internal stress, good chemical resistance, and a wide range of available thicknesses. It is less likely to soften or melt during cutting, making it especially suitable for CNC milling, drilling, engraving, threading, and edge polishing.
Appearance & Properties
Color: Colorless and transparent; also available in colored, translucent, frosted, and opaque forms
Density: Approx. 1.18–1.20 g/cm³
Tensile Strength: Approx. 60–75 MPa
Light Transmission: Typically up to approximately 92% for clear sheet
Weather Resistance: Good
Chemical Resistance: Good, but vulnerable to certain organic solvents
Machinability: Good
Bondability: Good
Surface Finishes: Mechanical polishing, flame polishing, diamond polishing, frosting, screen printing, painting, laser engraving, etc.
Typical Applications
Cast acrylic is widely used in industrial automation, laboratory equipment, medical devices, semiconductor equipment, optical systems, electronics, and commercial displays.
Typical CNC parts include transparent machine guards, precision viewing windows, laboratory chambers, channel plates, inspection fixtures, instrument panels, thick-wall enclosures, sample holders, and other transparent machined components.
Advantages
• Good optical clarity and surface quality
• Relatively low internal stress for precision machining
• Less likely to melt or stick to cutting tools
• Suitable for thick sections, deep grooves, steps, and complex profiles
• Suitable for polishing, bonding, and custom colors
Limitations
• Thickness tolerance is generally less consistent than extruded acrylic
• Usually more expensive than standard extruded acrylic
• Lower toughness and impact resistance than polycarbonate
• May crack under high loads, sharp stress concentrations, or solvent exposure
