NAK80 Mold Steel
NAK80 is a high-performance pre-hardened plastic mold steel known for its good machinability, excellent mirror polishability, and dimensional stability. It is typically supplied at approximately 37–43 HRC and can be precision CNC machined without additional through-hardening, making it particularly suitable for plastic molds requiring high surface quality and dimensional accuracy.
Appearance & Properties
Color: Silver-gray to dark gray
Density: Approx. 7.8 g/cm³
Hardness: Typically approx. 37–43 HRC in the pre-hardened condition
Corrosion Resistance: Poor
Machinability: Good
Mirror Polishability: Excellent
Dimensional Stability: Excellent
Toughness: Good
Magnetism: Magnetic
Heat Treatment: Commonly supplied pre-hardened; additional through-hardening is generally unnecessary
Surface Treatments: Mirror polishing, texturing, nitriding, PVD coating, etc.
Typical Applications
NAK80 Mold Steel is widely used in automotive, consumer electronics, home appliances, optical products, medical equipment, and high-precision plastic mold manufacturing.
Typical parts include high-gloss injection molds, mold cores, cavities, precision mold inserts, transparent plastic component molds, optical product molds, and high-surface-quality mold components.
Advantages
• Excellent mirror polishing capability
• Can be CNC machined directly in the pre-hardened condition
• Good dimensional stability
• Generally higher hardness than conventional P20 pre-hardened mold steel
• Ideal for high-gloss and high-precision plastic molds
Limitations
• Generally more expensive than conventional P20
• Limited corrosion resistance
• More difficult to machine than lower-hardness mold steels
• Not ideal when extremely high wear resistance or high-temperature performance is required
