S7 Tool Steel
S7 is a shock-resistant tool steel known for its excellent toughness, impact resistance, and high strength. Compared with wear-focused tool steels such as D2 and A2, S7 is better suited for applications involving impact, vibration, and sudden loads while maintaining good heat-treatment response and dimensional stability.
Appearance & Properties
Color: Silver-gray to dark gray
Density: Approx. 7.83 g/cm³
Hardness: Typically approx. 54–59 HRC after heat treatment
Corrosion Resistance: Poor
Machinability: Good when annealed; difficult after hardening
Wear Resistance: Moderate to good
Toughness: Excellent
Impact Resistance: Excellent
Magnetism: Magnetic
Heat Treatment: Annealing, hardening, tempering, etc.
Surface Treatments: Nitriding, PVD coating, black oxide, grinding, polishing, etc.
Typical Applications
S7 Tool Steel is widely used in die making, automotive, aerospace, metalworking, stamping, and heavy-duty industrial tooling.
Typical parts include punches, chisels, shear tools, stamping dies, die inserts, fixtures, heavy-duty tools, and precision mechanical components subjected to impact loading.
Advantages
• Excellent toughness and impact resistance
• Good strength and resistance to fracture
• Good dimensional stability after heat treatment
• Provides useful wear resistance
• Particularly suitable for impact and vibration applications
Limitations
• Generally lower wear resistance than D2
• Poor corrosion resistance
• Difficult to CNC machine after hardening
• Not ideal when extremely high wear resistance is the primary requirement
