Stainless Steel 316L
Stainless Steel 316L is the low-carbon version of 316 austenitic stainless steel, with “L” standing for Low Carbon. It provides excellent corrosion resistance and weldability, while its reduced carbon content helps minimize the risk of intergranular corrosion in heat-affected zones after welding. This makes it particularly suitable for welded structures and precision components used in chemical, medical, food, and pharmaceutical applications.
Appearance & Properties
Color: Silver-gray to bright silver
Density: Approx. 8.0 g/cm³
Tensile Strength: Typically ≥485 MPa (annealed condition, depending on material standard and product form)
Corrosion Resistance: Excellent
Machinability: Moderate
Weldability: Excellent
Magnetism: Generally non-magnetic when annealed; slight magnetism may develop after cold working
Surface Finishes: Polishing, brushing, bead blasting, passivation, electropolishing, etc.
Typical Applications
Stainless Steel 316L is widely used in medical devices, pharmaceutical equipment, food processing, chemical equipment, marine engineering, and high-cleanliness industrial systems.
Typical parts include valve bodies, pump components, flanges, pipe fittings, medical components, pharmaceutical equipment parts, food-processing components, sensor housings, and corrosion-resistant precision CNC parts.
Advantages
• Excellent corrosion resistance
• Low carbon content reduces the risk of intergranular corrosion after welding
• Excellent weldability
• Suitable for high-cleanliness and corrosive environments
• Well suited for passivation and electropolishing
Limitations
• Relatively difficult to CNC machine
• Prone to work hardening during machining
• Requires careful tool wear and heat management
• Material and machining costs are generally higher than 304
