A2 Tool Steel
A2 is an air-hardening cold-work tool steel offering a good balance of wear resistance, toughness, and dimensional stability. Compared with D2, A2 has slightly lower wear resistance but better toughness and impact resistance, while its relatively low heat-treatment distortion makes it suitable for precision dies and tooling components.
Appearance & Properties
Color: Silver-gray to dark gray
Density: Approx. 7.86 g/cm³
Hardness: Typically approx. 57–62 HRC after heat treatment
Corrosion Resistance: Poor
Machinability: Good when annealed; difficult after hardening
Wear Resistance: Good
Toughness: Good
Weldability: Poor
Magnetism: Magnetic
Heat Treatment: Air hardening, annealing, tempering, etc.
Surface Treatments: Nitriding, PVD coating, black oxide, grinding, polishing, etc.
Typical Applications
A2 Tool Steel is widely used in die making, automotive manufacturing, stamping, metalworking, precision machinery, and industrial tooling.
Typical parts include stamping dies, punches, forming dies, shear tools, gauges, wear inserts, precision fixtures, and high-strength tooling components.
Advantages
• Good balance of wear resistance and toughness
• Better impact resistance than D2
• Air hardening with relatively low distortion
• Good dimensional stability
• Suitable for precision dies and tooling components
Limitations
• Generally lower wear resistance than D2
• Poor corrosion resistance
• Poor weldability
• Difficult to CNC machine after hardening
