Aluminum 5052
Aluminum 5052 is a non-heat-treatable aluminum-magnesium alloy known for its excellent corrosion resistance, formability, and weldability. Compared with 6061, it offers lower strength but performs better in humid, marine, and corrosive environments, making it particularly suitable for sheet metal, enclosures, and lightweight structures.
Appearance & Properties
Color: Silver-white to silver-gray
Density: Approx. 2.68 g/cm³
Tensile Strength: Approx. 210–260 MPa (common H32 temper)
Corrosion Resistance: Excellent
Machinability: Fair
Weldability: Excellent
Formability: Excellent
Surface Finishes: Anodizing, bead blasting, brushing, polishing, powder coating, painting, etc.
Typical Applications
Aluminum 5052 is widely used in marine, automotive, electronics, sheet metal fabrication, transportation, and industrial equipment.
Typical parts include equipment enclosures, electronic chassis, sheet metal panels, marine components, tanks and containers, vehicle panels, brackets, and lightweight structural components.
Advantages
• Excellent corrosion resistance
• Good forming and bending performance
• Excellent weldability
• Lightweight and suitable for sheet metal structures
• Well suited for humid and marine environments
Limitations
• Lower strength than 6061, 6082, and 7075
• Fair CNC machinability
• Cannot be significantly strengthened by heat treatment
• Not ideal for high-load structural components
