AZ31B Magnesium Alloy
AZ31B is a widely used wrought magnesium alloy primarily containing magnesium, aluminum, and zinc. It offers low weight, good formability, good machinability, and moderate strength, making it one of the most common magnesium alloys for lightweight sheets, housings, and structural components.
Appearance & Properties
Color: Silver-white to light gray
Density: Approx. 1.77 g/cm³
Tensile Strength: Approx. 240–290 MPa, depending on condition
Corrosion Resistance: Moderate
Machinability: Good
Weldability: Good
Formability: Good
Surface Finishes: Chemical conversion coating, anodizing, bead blasting, painting, powder coating, etc.
Typical Applications
AZ31B is widely used in aerospace, automotive, electronics, consumer products, industrial equipment, and lightweight structures.
Typical parts include equipment housings, electronic enclosures, brackets, mounting plates, panels, UAV structures, lightweight frames, and precision CNC machined components.
Advantages
• Very low density compared with aluminum and steel
• Good CNC machinability
• Good formability and weldability
• Suitable for lightweight structural designs
• Good balance of performance and availability
Limitations
• Lower strength than high-strength magnesium alloys such as AZ80 and ZK60
• Limited corrosion resistance and usually requires surface protection
• Relatively low wear resistance
• Not ideal for prolonged high-temperature or high-load applications
