QT450 Ductile Iron
QT450 is a widely used ductile iron grade in which graphite is formed into spheroidal nodules. Compared with gray cast iron, it offers higher strength, toughness, and impact resistance while retaining good castability, wear resistance, and machinability.
Appearance & Properties
Color: Dark gray to gray-black
Density: Approx. 7.0–7.2 g/cm³
Tensile Strength: Typically ≥450 MPa
Wear Resistance: Good
Machinability: Good
Toughness: Good
Impact Resistance: Better than gray cast iron
Castability: Good
Magnetism: Magnetic
Surface Finishes: Painting, black oxide, phosphating, plating, grinding, etc.
Typical Applications
QT450 Ductile Iron is widely used in automotive, construction machinery, industrial equipment, agricultural machinery, pumps and valves, and power transmission systems.
Typical parts include wheel hubs, gears, brackets, bearing housings, pump bodies, valve bodies, flanges, machine housings, and various CNC-machined cast components.
Advantages
• Higher strength and toughness than conventional gray cast iron
• Good impact and fatigue resistance
• Good machinability
• Good wear resistance and load-bearing capability
• Suitable for complex cast structural components
Limitations
• Relatively heavy and not ideal for lightweight designs
• Poor corrosion resistance and usually requires surface protection
• Limited weldability
• Lower strength than some alloy steels
