Aluminum 5083
Aluminum 5083 is a high-strength, non-heat-treatable aluminum-magnesium alloy known for its excellent corrosion resistance, weldability, and structural performance. It performs particularly well in seawater and humid environments, making it a popular material for marine, offshore, and large welded structures.
Appearance & Properties
Color: Silver-white to silver-gray
Density: Approx. 2.66 g/cm³
Tensile Strength: Approx. 275–350 MPa (depending on temper)
Corrosion Resistance: Excellent
Machinability: Moderate
Weldability: Excellent
Formability: Good
Surface Finishes: Anodizing, bead blasting, brushing, polishing, painting, etc.
Typical Applications
Aluminum 5083 is widely used in marine, offshore engineering, transportation, automotive, industrial equipment, and pressure vessels.
Typical parts include hull structures, deck components, marine equipment brackets, vehicle structures, storage tanks, pressure vessel components, large mounting plates, and corrosion-resistant CNC parts.
Advantages
• Excellent seawater and corrosion resistance
• High strength among non-heat-treatable aluminum alloys
• Excellent weldability
• Good strength-to-weight ratio
• Well suited for marine and harsh environments
Limitations
• Lower CNC machinability than 6061 and 7075
• Cannot be significantly strengthened by heat treatment
• High-speed machining requires attention to chip control and material adhesion
• Not recommended for prolonged high-temperature service
