Aluminum 6082
Aluminum 6082 is a heat-treatable Al-Mg-Si alloy with relatively high strength within the 6000 series, while maintaining good corrosion resistance, machinability, and weldability. Compared with 6061, 6082 generally offers higher strength, making it suitable for CNC machined parts requiring greater load-bearing and structural performance.
Appearance & Properties
Color: Silver-white to silver-gray
Density: Approx. 2.70 g/cm³
Tensile Strength: Approx. 290–340 MPa (common T6 temper)
Corrosion Resistance: Good
Machinability: Good
Weldability: Good
Surface Finishes: Anodizing, bead blasting, brushing, polishing, powder coating, etc.
Typical Applications
Aluminum 6082 is widely used in automotive and transportation, industrial equipment, automation machinery, marine applications, engineering structures, and selected aerospace applications.
Typical parts include high-strength brackets, connectors, robotic structures, mounting components, load-bearing plates, vehicle structural parts, marine components, and precision CNC structural parts.
Advantages
• Relatively high strength within the 6000 series
• Good CNC machinability
• Good corrosion resistance and weldability
• Good balance of strength and weight
• Suitable for medium-to-high load structural components
Limitations
• Decorative surface finish is generally less favorable than 6063
• Lower strength than high-strength alloys such as 7075
• Thin-wall and complex parts may require careful distortion control
