Optical-Grade Acrylic
Optical-grade acrylic is a PMMA material manufactured with tighter control over light transmission, haze, internal inclusions, surface defects, and optical distortion. It may be produced by casting or extrusion and is suitable for precision components requiring clear viewing, uniform light guidance, or consistent optical performance.
Appearance & Properties
Color: Colorless and highly transparent; some products may have a slight optical tint
Density: Approx. 1.18–1.20 g/cm³
Tensile Strength: Approx. 60–75 MPa
Light Transmission: Typically up to approximately 92% for clear material
Haze: Generally low, depending on grade and thickness
Weather Resistance: Good
Optical Uniformity: Good to excellent
Machinability: Good, with careful protection of optical surfaces
Bondability: Good
Surface Finishes: Precision mechanical polishing, diamond polishing, optical coatings, hard coating, anti-reflective coating, laser processing, etc.
Typical Applications
Optical-grade acrylic is widely used in optical instruments, scientific equipment, medical diagnostic systems, machine vision, lighting, automotive lamps, and electronic displays.
Typical parts include optical viewing windows, light-guide plates, display covers, prototype lenses, optical alignment plates, inspection-instrument windows, LED optical components, and transparent instrument panels.
Advantages
• High light transmission and low haze
• Approximately half the weight of conventional glass
• Easy to machine into complex profiles, mounting holes, and alignment features
• Suitable for precision polishing and functional optical coatings
• Good weather resistance with limited yellowing under normal outdoor use
Limitations
• Lower surface hardness and scratch resistance than glass
• Machining scratches and edge defects may affect optical performance
• Not suitable for prolonged use near high-temperature light sources
• Precision optical grades cost more than standard clear acrylic
• May not replace optical glass in high-precision imaging applications
