Duplex Stainless Steel 2205
Duplex Stainless Steel 2205 is a widely used duplex grade with a microstructure consisting of both austenitic and ferritic phases. Compared with 304 and 316L, it offers significantly higher strength together with excellent resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and chloride stress-corrosion cracking, making it particularly suitable for demanding marine, chemical, and oil & gas environments.
Appearance & Properties
Color: Silver-gray to bright silver
Density: Approx. 7.8 g/cm³
Tensile Strength: Typically ≥620 MPa (annealed condition, depending on standard and product form)
Corrosion Resistance: Excellent
Machinability: Moderate to difficult
Weldability: Good
Strength: High
Magnetism: Magnetic
Surface Finishes: Passivation, pickling, polishing, grinding, bead blasting, etc.
Typical Applications
Duplex Stainless Steel 2205 is widely used in oil & gas, marine engineering, chemical processing, energy, pulp and paper, and industrial fluid-handling equipment.
Typical parts include valve bodies, pump components, flanges, pipe fittings, valve stems, shafts, pressure equipment components, offshore connectors, and corrosion-resistant precision CNC parts.
Advantages
• Significantly higher strength than 304 and 316L
• Excellent resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion
• Good resistance to chloride stress-corrosion cracking
• Suitable for marine and chemical environments
• Excellent combination of strength and corrosion resistance
Limitations
• More difficult to CNC machine than common austenitic stainless steels
• Higher cutting forces and tool wear during machining
• Welding requires more careful process control
• Material and machining costs are generally higher than 304
