Grade 5 Titanium
Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) is one of the most widely used titanium alloys, consisting primarily of titanium with approximately 6% aluminum and 4% vanadium. It offers an excellent strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance, and fatigue performance. Compared with commercially pure Grade 2 titanium, Grade 5 provides significantly higher strength, making it ideal for aerospace, automotive, medical, and high-performance mechanical components.
Appearance & Properties
Color: Silver-gray to silvery white
Density: Approx. 4.43 g/cm³
Tensile Strength: Typically around 895 MPa or higher for common annealed specifications
Corrosion Resistance: Excellent
Machinability: Difficult
Strength-to-Weight Ratio: Excellent
Fatigue Resistance: Good
Heat Resistance: Good
Magnetism: Essentially non-magnetic
Surface Finishes: Blasting, polishing, anodizing, passivation, PVD coating, etc.
Typical Applications
Grade 5 Titanium is widely used in aerospace, drones, automotive and motorsports, medical equipment, robotics, energy, and high-performance industrial systems.
Typical parts include aerospace structures, engine components, drone structures, high-strength fasteners, robotic joint components, medical devices, brackets, shafts, and lightweight precision CNC parts.
Advantages
• Excellent strength-to-weight ratio
• Significantly stronger than Grade 2 titanium
• Excellent corrosion resistance
• Good fatigue and elevated-temperature performance
• Ideal for high-strength lightweight components
Limitations
• Difficult to CNC machine
• Low thermal conductivity concentrates cutting heat near the tool
• Tendency toward tool adhesion and accelerated tool wear
• Higher material and machining costs than aluminum and conventional steels
