Stellite 12
Stellite 12 is a high-hardness cobalt-chromium wear-resistant alloy. Compared with Stellite 6, it contains higher levels of carbon and tungsten, providing greater hardness and wear resistance. It is particularly suitable for components exposed to severe abrasion, metal-to-metal wear, and elevated temperatures.
Appearance & Properties
Color: Silver-gray to bright silver-gray
Density: Approx. 8.4–8.6 g/cm³
Hardness: Typically approx. 44–51 HRC, depending on product form and condition
Wear Resistance: Excellent
Corrosion Resistance: Excellent
High-Temperature Performance: Excellent
Machinability: Very Difficult
Anti-Galling Performance: Excellent
Oxidation Resistance: Good
Magnetism: Generally somewhat magnetic
Surface Finishes: Grinding, polishing, blasting, precision grinding, etc.
Typical Applications
Stellite 12 is widely used in oil and gas, energy, chemical processing, aerospace, industrial cutting, and high-temperature machinery.
Typical parts include industrial cutting blades, valve seats, valve components, sealing rings, nozzles, wear plates, pump components, and high-temperature wear-resistant precision parts.
Advantages
• Higher wear resistance than Stellite 6
• Retains high hardness at elevated temperatures
• Excellent anti-galling and friction resistance
• Good corrosion and oxidation resistance
• Particularly suitable for severe-wear applications
Limitations
• Very difficult to CNC machine
• Generally lower toughness than Stellite 6
• High cutting-tool wear and machining costs
• Not ideal for components requiring high impact toughness
