Zamak 5
Zamak 5 is a widely used zinc-aluminum-copper alloy. Compared with Zamak 3, its higher copper content provides increased strength, hardness, and wear resistance while maintaining excellent die-casting characteristics and good surface quality.
Appearance & Properties
Color: Silver-gray to bright silver-gray
Density: Approx. 6.7 g/cm³
Tensile Strength: Approx. 315–330 MPa, depending on condition and manufacturing process
Corrosion Resistance: Moderate to Good
Machinability: Good
Die Castability: Excellent
Strength: Good
Wear Resistance: Good
Magnetism: Non-magnetic
Surface Finishes: Polishing, electroplating, painting, powder coating, passivation, etc.
Typical Applications
Zamak 5 is widely used in automotive, electrical and electronics, hardware, home appliances, furniture, locks, and industrial equipment.
Typical parts include lock components, handles, brackets, connectors, mechanical housings, gears, decorative parts, and various precision die-cast components.
Advantages
• Higher strength and hardness than Zamak 3
• Good wear resistance
• Excellent die-casting performance
• Suitable for complex and thin-wall precision components
• Good surface-finishing capability
Limitations
• Generally lower ductility than Zamak 3
• Not suitable for prolonged high-temperature service
• Relatively high density for lightweight applications
• Limited corrosion resistance when left unprotected
