Aluminum 7050
Aluminum 7050 is a high-strength, heat-treatable aluminum-zinc alloy offering high strength, good fracture toughness, and strong resistance to stress-corrosion cracking. Compared with 7075, 7050 is particularly valued for maintaining reliable properties in thicker sections, making it widely used for aerospace and highly loaded precision structures.
Appearance & Properties
Color: Silver-white to silver-gray
Density: Approx. 2.83 g/cm³
Tensile Strength: Approx. 480–550 MPa (common T7451 temper)
Corrosion Resistance: Good
Machinability: Good
Weldability: Poor
Strength & Toughness: Excellent
Surface Finishes: Anodizing, hard anodizing, bead blasting, polishing, painting, etc.
Typical Applications
Aluminum 7050 is primarily used in aerospace, UAVs, high-performance machinery, and high-strength industrial equipment.
Typical parts include aircraft fuselage structures, wing components, frames, bulkheads, high-strength brackets, large mounting components, and high-load precision CNC parts.
Advantages
• High strength and excellent strength-to-weight ratio
• Good fracture toughness
• Better stress-corrosion cracking resistance than common 7075-T6
• Good performance in thick-section components
• Suitable for large, highly loaded precision structures
Limitations
• Relatively high material cost
• Poor weldability
• Lower corrosion resistance than most 6000-series alloys
• Less cost-effective for general low-load components
