AZ91D Magnesium Alloy
AZ91D is one of the most widely used die-casting magnesium alloys, known for its excellent castability, good machinability, and favorable strength-to-weight ratio. It is particularly suitable for complex thin-wall housings and high-volume die-cast components.
Appearance & Properties
Color: Silver-white to light gray
Density: Approx. 1.81 g/cm³
Tensile Strength: Approx. 230–250 MPa in typical die-cast condition
Corrosion Resistance: Good for a commonly used die-cast magnesium alloy
Machinability: Excellent
Castability: Excellent
Weldability: Moderate to low
Surface Finishes: Chemical conversion coating, anodizing, bead blasting, painting, powder coating, plating, etc.
Typical Applications
AZ91D is widely used in automotive, consumer electronics, telecommunications, power tools, industrial equipment, and lightweight housings.
Typical parts include electronic housings, automotive housings, transmission cases, equipment covers, tool housings, brackets, and complex die-cast components.
Advantages
• Excellent die-casting performance
• Suitable for complex thin-wall parts
• Good secondary CNC machinability
• Lightweight and suitable for high-volume production
• Good corrosion resistance among common die-cast magnesium alloys
Limitations
• Lower strength than high-strength magnesium alloys such as AZ80 and ZK60
• Limited high-temperature strength
• Moderate wear resistance
• Surface protection is usually recommended for long-term corrosion resistance
