Zamak 3
Zamak 3 is one of the most widely used Zamak zinc alloys, consisting primarily of zinc and aluminum with a small amount of magnesium. It offers excellent die-casting performance, dimensional stability, and surface-finishing capability, making it ideal for complex, thin-wall, and dimensionally accurate components.
Appearance & Properties
Color: Silver-gray to bright silver-gray
Density: Approx. 6.6 g/cm³
Tensile Strength: Approx. 280 MPa, depending on condition and manufacturing process
Corrosion Resistance: Moderate to Good
Machinability: Good
Die Castability: Excellent
Dimensional Stability: Excellent
Surface Quality: Excellent
Magnetism: Non-magnetic
Surface Finishes: Polishing, electroplating, painting, powder coating, passivation, etc.
Typical Applications
Zamak 3 is widely used in automotive, electrical and electronics, home appliances, hardware, furniture, locks, and consumer products.
Typical parts include housings, connectors, handles, knobs, lock components, brackets, decorative parts, and various precision die-cast components.
Advantages
• Excellent die-casting and flow characteristics
• Good dimensional stability
• Suitable for complex and thin-wall components
• Excellent surface quality for plating and coating
• Good balance of performance and cost
Limitations
• Lower strength and hardness than Zamak 2 and Zamak 5
• Not suitable for prolonged high-temperature service
• Relatively high density for lightweight applications
• Limited corrosion resistance when left unprotected
