Aluminum 2024
Aluminum 2024 is a high-strength aluminum alloy with copper as its primary alloying element. It offers high strength, good fatigue performance, and good machinability. With its excellent strength-to-weight ratio, 2024 is widely used in aerospace and highly loaded mechanical structures, particularly for precision components subjected to repeated or cyclic loading.
Appearance & Properties
Color: Silver-white to silver-gray
Density: Approx. 2.78 g/cm³
Tensile Strength: Approx. 430–480 MPa (common T3/T351 tempers)
Corrosion Resistance: Fair
Machinability: Good
Weldability: Poor
Surface Finishes: Anodizing, bead blasting, polishing, painting, chemical conversion coating, etc.
Typical Applications
Aluminum 2024 is widely used in aerospace, UAVs, transportation, high-performance machinery, and precision industrial equipment.
Typical parts include aircraft structural components, wing and fuselage components, high-strength brackets, connectors, fasteners, UAV structures, precision fixtures, and high-load CNC machined parts.
Advantages
• High strength and excellent strength-to-weight ratio
• Good fatigue performance
• Good CNC machinability
• Suitable for components subjected to cyclic loading
• Well suited for high-strength precision parts
Limitations
• Lower corrosion resistance than 6000-series aluminum alloys
• Poor weldability
• Often requires additional surface protection
• Generally more expensive than standard 6061 aluminum
